Time to Renew (or Buy a New) Dog Licence

November 9, 2021

It’s dog licence renewal time for pet owners in the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). Annual renewal notices will arrive in the mail by mid-November and it’s now easier than ever to make payments online at fvrd.ca/onlineservices

With the holiday season approaching, it is also a great time to give your dog the gift of security if your dog is unlicensed. Read more to learn why it’s important to license your dog.

The FVRD provides licensing for Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, Kent, and Mission. All dogs four months or older are required to have a current licence.

In 2020, the Community Animal Response and Education (CARE) Centre which provides animal control services to the regional district found that just 21% of the dogs impounded were licensed. Those lucky dogs were reunited with their families quickly and received a free ride home.

It may be surprising for residents to learn that the fine for owning an unlicensed dog is $200. When unlicensed dogs are impounded, not only is it challenging to reunite these dogs with their owners but there are also fees associated with retrieving an unlicensed dog that the owner must pay. These fees are higher than the cost of a licence.

There Are Many Good Reasons to License Your Dog(s).

A licence gives your dog an identity that is connected to you.

Your information is entered into a database that can be accessed by animal control officers at the CARE Centre. If your dog is wearing an FVRD licence tag when it strays from home, officers can look up this information and reunite you with your pet very quickly.

Licence fees help fund services at the CARE Centre including the housing of lost, stray and impounded dogs and reuniting of lost dogs with their owners. We respond to hurt or stray animals in emergencies, educate the public, and enforce pet rules with these funds.

Annual licences start as low as $22.
