Stay Away From the Harrison and Fraser Rivers This Weekend

The Fraser Valley Regional District is informing residents and visitors of the danger of high water levels in the Harrison and Fraser Rivers over the Canada Day long weekend.

The public should stay away from the Harrison and Fraser Rivers at this time. During periods of high flow, river banks may be unstable and more prone to sudden collapse. Stay well away and keep young children and pets away from the banks of fast-flowing streams and flooded areas or bridges.

New forecasts from the River Forecast Centre show the Fraser River possibly rising to 1972 flood levels which are higher than earlier forecasts and may impact low-lying areas and areas not protected by dikes.

The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has issued Evacuation Alerts for areas in Electoral Areas B, C and G. People who live in these areas may expect Evacuation Orders to be issued for their properties in the coming days if currently forecasted conditions continue. Current Evacuation Alerts

  • June 27 - Harrison Mills (Electoral Area C)
  • June 29 - Nicomen Island, North Nicomen Island and Taylor Road area (Electoral Area G)
  • June 29 - Laidlaw: Jones Creek, Wahleach Creek, and Lorenzetta Creek areas (Electoral Area B)

All Evacuation Alerts and Orders are posted to fvrd.ca/eoc. Residents in these areas should begin making preparations to secure their properties. Free sand and sandbags are available at locations Harrison Mills, Deroche and Laidlaw.
