November 20, 2024
Chilliwack, BC – The FVRD has been collaborating with FoodMesh since 2018 to divert food waste within the region. The online platform connects local food banks, charities, and farmers with grocery stores and food producers so that surplus food is put to better use than ending up in the trash.
“This project is helping the FVRD region reduce the amount of food waste being disposed of and finding higher uses that benefit the environment, our economy and communities,” said Jason Lum, FVRD Board Chair.
To date, the 219 network participants in the region and through the programs and services of FoodMesh, the food recovery network has:
- Provided 6.1 million meals
- Rescued 4.4 million kg of food
- Reduced CO2 emissions by more than 11 million kg
This totals $22 million in donation value to the region.
The numbers add up across the country with one in four Canadians are food insecure; 46% of food is considered wasted in Canada; and 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are due to food loss and waste. FoodMesh’s food recovery platform assists participating businesses to feed more, reduce waste, and save money.
